Aa-machine for the Apple II family
==================================

This directory holds bootable disk images for the story, together with
the files they were built from.

System Requirements
-------------------

Requires 64 kB. All the disks boot by themselves and need no ProDOS.

The interpreter identifies the machine at boot time:

Apple ][+ 40 columns, upper case only
  //e / //c / IIgs     80 columns when an 80-column card is present
128 kB machines additional page cache, undo support

Disk Images
-----------

This story does not fit on one 140 kB disk alongside the interpreter,
so it comes as a two-disk set:

  Forensic-Necromancy--A-Murder-in-Nineveh-boot.dsk
  Forensic-Necromancy--A-Murder-in-Nineveh-story.dsk
Boot the first (volume /AA.BOOT, holding AAM.SYSTEM) and keep
the second (volume /AA.STORY, holding STORY) in the other
       drive.

  Forensic-Necromancy--A-Murder-in-Nineveh-800k.po
Bootable 800 kB disk (volume /AA.STORY) for a
       3.5" drive or an emulator.

Saving
------

Saved games are written into SAVEFILE, an empty 4 kB file that sits on
the boot volume next to AAM.SYSTEM. The interpreter overwrites it in
place -- it cannot create one or make it bigger -- so do not delete it,
and leave that disk write enabled if you want to save. On a two-disk
set it is the boot disk that has to be writable, not the story disk.

Building Your Own ProDOS Volume
-------------------------------

The other files in this directory are the ones that go on a ProDOS
disk, for putting the story on a hard disk or a volume of your own:

AAM.SYSTEM the interpreter. ProDOS file type SYS ($ff),
auxiliary type (load address) $2000. ProDOS runs the
first *.SYSTEM file in the volume directory at boot,
so this should be the only one on the disk.

STORY the story file. ProDOS file type BIN ($06) is a
reasonable choice. The name must be STORY, in the
volume directory, because that is the pathname the
               interpreter opens.

SAVEFILE an empty 4 kB file, ProDOS file type BIN ($06), that
saved games are written into. Optional, but without
it the story cannot be saved. It goes on the boot
               volume, next to AAM.SYSTEM.

When booting from real ProDOS, name the volume containing the story
file AA.STORY because the interpreter will scan for it by volume path.

Running on an Emulator
----------------------

The disk images boot in any Apple II emulator. The easiest one to
reach is Apple2TS, which runs in a browser with nothing to install:

  https://apple2ts.com

Drop the 800 kb image onto the window, or use its disk menu to pick
from your machine, and it boots into the story.

The 140 kB images are 5.25" floppies and go into a Disk ][ drive.
The 800 kB image is a 3.5" disk and has to go into an emulated 3.5"
drive: it boots through SmartPort, so a slot configured as a plain
ProDOS hard disk will not start it.

To save, the boot disk has to be write enabled, and the emulator has
to keep the change: in Apple2TS use "Save Disk to Device" to download
the modified image, or the saved game goes away with the browser tab.
